Target: Your People or Your Brother
The Truth about Reality
The twisted ending is intense as it shows how your own "brother" could be fighting against you in war or in real life. For example the story "The Sniper" by Liam O'Flaherty highlights that idea. Two brothers in war are fighting against one another and they don’t know it until one of the brothers kills the other. This story is impactful as it forces readers the brutal of war in a way that news media and action movies fail to show.
Different Narratives Painted
The dramatic irony that is painted in the story, "The Sniper" by Liam O'Flaherty, is that in many movies, video games and news media the narrative "us" and "them" is painted. Separating two parties against each other. Soldiers are seen as brave people protecting their country/party/what they stand for, fighting against the villains from their point. This goes for the opposite side (team) from their view. In video games and some movies it reveals one's enemy is their friend or brother. Specifically in video games most people fight against their friends and in some movies like the "Avengers" franchise "Thor" fights against his cousin.
As a viewer this makes us realise that the soldiers/the people in the battle field are more than the badge they wear. Each person has so much more than the badge they wear, whether it be a family, relationships and friends.
Heroism vs. Betrayal
The twisted ending in the story "The Sniper" by Liam O'Flaherty is powerful as it makes one question why war is so praised by opposing countries/parties and other countries/parties. Why is it that issues are resort to violence whether it be for the smallest thing like debates held in class escalating to a fight or world issues like the Ukraine and Russian war. Is it for power and control or is it for morals and ethics (Standing up for what is "right").
War and heroism don’t only affect the citizens it also affects the people in the battle field. They are fighting for their country and their lives trying to stay alive. Is war always the solution? Would you be okay with being in a battle field?
